Violent protests are being led on over the death of an African-American man who died in police custody. A man was shot during the protests in Minneapolis for the second night. The protesters were looting stores bordering the police confined area. They were also setting fires that continued to burn until Thursday morning.
Minneapolis is in a bizarre state over the death of George Floyd as he died while in-custody of white police officers. The situation escalated since Wednesday night as fatal shooting near the site of the demonstrations due to widespread looting and deployment of tear gas.
The demonstrations in the city began peacefully for the second night but grew violent as time went by. It became very unsafe and hence the citizens were requested to leave the area.
His death is being investigated by the FBI and the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension.
The Mayor, Mr. Jacob Frey pleaded with residents to calm down. He demanded that charges must be filed against the officer who had his knee on Floyd’s neck. Police had said Floyd resisted arrest, but Frey said “I saw nothing that would signal that this kind of force was necessary.”
“I’m imploring our city, imploring our community, imploring every one of us to keep the peace. Let’s honor George Floyd’s memory,” he said in a phone interview.
He also tweeted this on his twitter account. “Please, Minneapolis, we cannot let tragedy beget more tragedy. The area along Lake has become unsafe. We are asking for your help in keeping the peace tonight.”
An unidentified victim was rushed to Hennepin County Medical Center as the police officers found him at the protest site. He was found lying down on a sidewalk. At the hospital he was declared dead, they stated that he was shot.
Video of Floyd’s death has sparked outrage all around the country. The presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden said about the incident on Tuesday“tragic reminder that it was not an isolated incident, but a part of an ingrained systemic cycle of injustice that still exists in this country.”
