Barack Obama and his fascination for Nicotine gum

It was India’s 66^th Republic Day and like every year this time US, President, Barack Obama, was the chief guest for the ceremony which  is traditionally held by the Prime Minister and President of India, in New Delhi.

Obama was seen chewing gum at the Republic Day parade on Monday, where he was the chief guest. Pictures of the event showed him chewing gum (Nicorette tablet) and then removing it while Prime Minister Narendra Modi was talking to him.

Though there was a lot of commentary on social media on his chewing gum at a formal ceremony, this was not the first time Obama has been spotted doing so.

Ever-conscious of the many cameras that capture his every move, Obama waited for just the right moment — during an event honouring former President George H.W. Bush — when it seemed likely that no network in the world would be focusing on the current president.

Obama at the Asia-Pacific Economic Corporation summit in China, last year, raised some eyebrows for chewing gum at inappropriate times.

Obama has a well-documented history of using gum control to stave off his smoking urges, but it’s rare to catch the president getting his nicotine fix in public.

The White House press secretary, in the past, said, “Obama still struggles with a nicotine addiction, but the spokesman didn’t say whether the president still smokes cigarettes.

In the past, Obama has spoken about the difficulty of quitting cigarettes and also thinks, quitting the addiction is a lifelong struggle.

Nicotine gum is a type of chewing gum that delivers nicotine to the body. It is used as an aid in nicotine replacement therapy (NRT), a process for smoking cessation and quitting smokeless tobacco. The nicotine is delivered to the bloodstream via absorption by the tissues of the mouth.
