TaiwanPlus Celebrates International Women’s Day With Nobel Laureate Maria Ressa Interview and Documentaries That Showcase the Diversity of Taiwan Contemporary Women

TAIPEI, Taiwan–()–TaiwanPlus, a new global English-language video-streaming program has released a variety of new programs featuring women’s stories from Taiwan and beyond as part of the global celebration of International Women’s Day on March 8, 2022. Among the featured programs for the event is an interview with Maria Ressa, a Filipino-American journalist who was recently awarded the 2021 Nobel Peace Prize.

Maria Ressa has worked as an international investigative journalist for over 35 years, specializing in research on terrorism, press freedom, and disinformation. TaiwanPlus News Center Director, Divya Gopalan, met with Ressa to discuss her experiences in the field and the challenges that women journalists face in reporting. “The gendered disinformation that tears us down has contributed to m any women journalists all around the world choosing to opt out,” Ressa explains in the interview. She is the first journalist to receive the Nobel Prize in 86 years, and only the 18th

woman to receive the award in its 120-year history.

TaiwanPlus International Women’s Day programming also features content on a wide range of women’s accomplishments in Taiwan. “The stories of the women we’ve chosen to feature in our Women’s Day programming reflects Taiwan’s diverse culture and determined people. The achievements of Taiwan’s women are an important part of our past and future, and we’re grateful for the opportunity to share these stories with the world on our platform,” TaiwanPlus CEO Joanne Tsai remarks.

The Women’s Day programs include several documentary pieces touching on contemporary social issues affecting women in Taiwan and around the globe. “Fatbulous Me” shares the story of a Taiwanese woman’s journey with body positivity, self-confidence, and societal pressures that push women to conformity. In “Dear Period,” viewers travel alongside Lin Nien-tzu, a community organizer from Taiwan, as she promotes education and social entrepreneurship on menstruation in rural Nepal. Taiwan’s lesbian community comes under the spotlight in “Legit Moms, Illegitimate Kid,” detailing the legal, physical, and emotional challenges that two mothers face in preparing for the birth of their first child.

TaiwanPlus’ International Women’s Day programming is available to stream for free.
