Launched in 2014, the league has attracted a large number of both rural and urban viewers over the years. After being postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the eight edition of the league began on 22nd December, 2021 in Bengaluru.

A founding member of the Pro Kabaddi League, Puneri Paltan has made it to the play-offs twice in the past in the highly competitive league. This year, the team is being led by Nitin Tomar and coached by Anup Kumar, the former captain of the Indian national kabaddi team that won the Kabaddi World Cup in 2016 and Asian Games gold medals in 2010 and 2014.
