It was clear during the late evening and early morning event setup that The Quail would continue it’s tradition of competition and community among automotive fans the world over. The traffic before, and during the event, was awash with beauty and colorful vehicles of all kinds, in addition to the countless suspense inducing covered trailers carrying vehicles for debut and competition. The beautiful Pebble Beach, Monterey and Carmel-By-The-Sea landscapes certainly didn’t hurt either. This year, Tom Clarke was at the event for more than a good time. Tommy and the entire team were looking forward to the reveal of the Gunther Werks “Project Tornado” Porsche 993. Everyone was excited to spend time with the Gunther Werks team face-to-face to connect and debut this incredible restomod build.
The tireless efforts of the Gunther Werks and an incredible build team, to continue their incredible streak of fantastic Porsche restomods, culminated in the official debut of the “Project Tornado” Porsche 993, at The Quail and Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance. Tom Clarke was proud to be present at the release, since he has his own Gunther Werks Turbo in the making prior to the event. All the respective members of the Gunther Werks, Rothsport Racing and Tommy Cars teams could not be happier with the results.
The Gunther Werks® “Project Tornado” is a unique car, paying homage to the original 993 design and the special moment in Porsche® history it represents, with most of the 911 parts redesigned from the ground up and improved upon in both technical capability and design. Bringing this history into a new generation of carbon fiber, with meticulous attention to detail in both design and performance, made starting his build an easy decision for Tom.
This remastered Porsche 993 raises the bar for any restomod project, with the Gunther Werks teams’ masterful use carbon fiber for the entire body, cockpit, steering wheel (and much more), and brilliant engineering and design, meeting flawlessly with a Rothsport Racing 4.0-liter twin-turbo engine providing up to 700 horsepower built by Jeff Gamroth and team.
Rarely has undeniable attraction met with hypercar performance with such elegance. Everything about Project Tornado is intentional…gorgeous body lines designed with innovative aerodynamic and intake/cooling features. Tom elected to include a two-tier spoiler in his build, designed to optimize down-force, while cooling off the engine and its turbos. With many other unique options, there is no mistaking the goal of this project: An Elegant Weapon.
