Asian and Pacific Islander American Scholars (APIA Scholars), Californians Together and UnidosUS Host Briefing on English Learner Students and AANHPI Needs
WASHINGTON, June 5, 2023 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ — APIA Scholars (Asian Pacific Islander American Scholars) hosted a briefing in Sacramento with Californians Together (CalTog) and UnidosUS on May 11 on English Learner Students and the unique needs of Asian American and Native Hawaiian Pacific Islander (AANHPI) students. The event attendees included California’s State Assemblymember Mike Fong and State Senator Dave Min, as well as staff and analysts from the state’s AAPI, Latino and Black caucuses, California’s Department of Education, and local advocacy organizations.
California has the largest EL student population in the nation and AANHPI students represent a critical mass of EL students in the state, comprising 11.8% of the total EL student population. With the publication of the new report by APIA Scholars in collaboration with Robert Teranishi and members of UCLA’s Institute for Immigration, Globalization and Education, speakers shared findings that point to the rapid growth of AANHPI English Learners in California and continued under-served needs of these students, and recommendations to address the unique challenges of AANHPI K-12 EL students in California.
Co-host UnidosUS provided research learnings on Latino English Learners from state-wide listening sessions as well as recommendations from their policy brief. Co-host Californians Together presented immediate legislative, policy, and program recommendations on data disaggregation, bilingual teacher pipeline, as well as translation services during the briefing presentation.
The research and the event concluded with recommendations on how policymakers, advocates, school district leaders, teachers and community-based organizations can better understand and support AANHPI English Learners through polices, programs and practice.
