He did his schooling from the Campion School till class 8 and then went to Cathedral and John Connon School and Shimla at Bishop Cotton School. He completed his graduation from Riverdale Country School in New York City in 1955 and has attended the 7-week Advanced Management Program of Harvard Business School.

In 1962, he joined the Tata group on the advice of JRD Tata after turning down a job with IBM. He was sent to Jamshedpur and worked on the floor with other blue-collar employees. It was under Ratan Tata only, profit grew over 50 times revenues, over 40 times during his 21 years.

In 1971, Ratan Tata was appointed the Director-in-Charge of NELCO (National Radio & Electronics Company Limited). NELCO had 2% market share in the consumer electronics market and when Ratan took over, NELCO loss margin of 40% of sales. But the losses were soon recovered in 1975 and eventually, NELCO grew to have a market share of 20%.

Ratan was entrusted with a textile mill known as Empress Mills in 1977. Being controlled by the Tatas, he through his clever business skills managed to turn the mill from being a sick unit to even declaring a dividend. He was named director of Tata Industries in 1981.

Ratan Tata then took over as group chairman from J.R.D. Tata in 1991, ushering in younger managers by pushing out the old guard.
