If you have enough of having to worry about SMS charges, Google’s latest update for Messages, its default messaging app, has you covered. The tech giants have now introduced a feature that allows users to send messages through the app using WiFi or data. It further provides other useful information such as read receipts, group conversation support, and typing indicators.
The RCS feature is in no way a brand new feature for users. It is already available in many countries, including the United States. However, Google has now decided to launch it in India, among other countries. Reportedly, Kuwait, Canada, UAE, South Korea, etc. are also starting to get the new update. The company has adopted a slow rollout policy to release the RCS support, meaning that gradually over time, all android users will have access to it. However, to use it, users need to have compatible devices.
The settings can be enabled via a pop-up message that appears after the update. Apart from that, users can also go into the settings option and turn on the feature. With RCS enabled messaging, Google intends to do away with the ancient SMS technology.
Furthermore, Google has begun to roll out another function that will revolutionize how the Messages app operates. Reports suggest that the new feature will let users sort out conversations in different categories. The app will also have new categories such as personal, OTPs, transactions, offers, and more. Reportedly, Google plans to reduce the inbox clutter through the sorting system.
The categories are also changeable, so users can change messages to a different category than initially assigned. Like the RCS support, the category feature can also be toggled off or on from the settings option.
Google has already started to rollout the category update in India, as many have already claimed to receive it on their device. However, the mass rollout is yet to happen. Nonetheless, we suggest you update the Google Messages app on the Play Store to check whether you’ve got the update or not.
