The 21st century is undoubtedly the Android era in the field of telecommunications and information technology. The Android OS specifically used for mobile devices, televisions, wrist watches, and other electronic gadgets has dominated the global market since 2011, after its acquisition by Google and its subsequent improvements.

The Android global market share is expected to grow from 72.23% in 2018 to 85.5% in 2022. This dominance does not reflect on the United States, however, as the Apple iOS leads with 62.01% of the US market share.

When it comes to the leading mobile operating systems on a global scale, as of 2018, Android leads with 72.23%, followed closely by Apple iOS with 24.55%. KAiOS with 1.12%, and Windows with only 0.39%.

Further research reveals major milestones of the Android OS from the 2003–2017 period that have contributed immensely to its success. It is no wonder that this operating system accounts for 61% share of the global tablet shipments in the third quarter of 2018.

To be more precise, 99.83% of downloaded tool apps are Android-based, communications apps get 99.41%, video players and editors 96.64%, travel and local 95.73%, social 95.10%, and productivity 92.06%.

When compared with the app traffic share of Apple iOS, the Android OS was way ahead in SnapChat search and referrals. On Whatsapp, Android was dominant with 50.8% of the search traffic share. On Instagram, it rolled in 40.9% of the app search traffic share.
