Schalke players pelted with eggs by fans after being relegated from Bundesliga

With four matches left and only 13 points in this season so far, the ‘Royal Blues’ cannot possibly make a comeback from the bottom of the table now. This news did not gel well with their supporters. The fans were reportedly seen attacking the Schalke players outside the Veltins Arena just after the team got back from the match. Two of the Schalke defenders, Sead Kolasinac & Shkodran Mustafi, were chased down by fans and had to run away from getting egged.

According to Gelsenkirchen police, a group of 500 to 600 fans waited for the team as they returned to their home stadium. “Once players got off the bus, eggs were thrown at them, and they were verbally abused,” police said. The police were able to control the situation and prevent further escalation.

“We were pelted with eggs, firecrackers went off and the situation escalated completely. The fans attacked us. We just ran. It was fear, pure fear! I was just running. Some of us got kicked and punched. I am shocked, and I don’t know how we are going to compete in the next games. I also don’t understand why we were exposed to the fans this way in the first place. The club said that there would only be a short exchange. Meanwhile, the police waited away from that situation.”

“During this encounter, so far unidentified individual people from the crowd crossed lines which FC Schalke 04 considers non-negotiable.”

“There was an exchange between the team and some groups of fans in the early hours of this morning. Some individuals overstepped boundaries that are non-negotiable for Schalke 04,” The club tweeted on their official account.

The toll of being relegated is always hard on a team, Let alone Schalke who often plays in the Champions League. The club understood everyone’s frustration but was strongly against how the supporters reacted. “The club will never accept the physical welfare of its players and staff being endangered. That is exactly what happened last night due to the actions of individuals.” They added in their statement.
