No other team has probably taken as much risk in their World Cup squad as much as Sri Lanka has done. They have five players in the World Cup squad who haven’t played ODI cricket in the last two years and to top it off they have selected a captain whose last ODI appearance was in 2015 World Cup.
Sri Lanka’s performance in the recent times hasn’t been impressive by any means so this seems like a tough World Cup for the island nation.
Sri Lanka World Cup 2019 squad:
Dimuth Karunaratne (capt), Avishka Fernando, Suranga Lakmal, Lasith Malinga, Angelo Mathews, Jeevan Mendis, Kusal Mendis (wk), Kusal Perera (wk), Thisara Perera, Nuwan Pradeep, Dhananjaya de Silva, Milinda Siriwardana, Lahiru Thirimanne, Isuru Udana, Jeffrey Vandersay
Sri Lanka make massive gamble for World Cup 2019
With such severe changes in the squad, it will be interesting to see how Sri Lanka performs in the ICC World Cup 2019. They do have some experience in the form of Lasith Malinga, Angelo Mathews and Thisara Perera. However the team is plagued with several issues and the confidence of the unit is low. It will be a major upset if Sri Lanka performs well in the World Cup.
