The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has suspended the 13th season of the Indian Premier League for an indefinite period. The IPL working committee has taken this decision as the Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi extended the nation-wide lockdown untill 03rd May.
In a statement released on Thursday and signed by secretary Jay Shah, BCCI said that the IPL Governing Council of the BCCI has decided that the IPL 2020 Season will be suspended till further notice.The decision comes after the top brass of BCCI officials had a meeting on Tuesday including BCCI president Sourav Ganguly, secretary Jay Shah, treasurer Arun Dhumal, IPL chairman Brijesh Patel, and Hemang Amin.
Before this, BCCI had suspended the tournament till 15th April. There were talks about playing the matches behind closed doors and at selected centers to ensure there is no mass gatherings and lesser travel for players.
However, with the COVID-19 pandemic not in control, the BCCI was left with no options other than postponing the tournament till further notice.
Sports tournaments across the world have taken a hit due to the pandemic and several tournaments have been canceled including the Wimbledon and the Olympics.
The suspension of IPL makes it extremely difficult for the BCCI to play a full-fledged season later this year as the cricket calendar is very tight and overseas players might not get a window to play in the league.
