A bomb blast in Ankara shakes Turkey

A suicide car bomb blast in Ankara led to the death of 37 people, Turkey’s health minister informed the press. The crowded transportation hub was the target of the attack on Sunday which left more than 125 injured. The death toll is expected to rise. This is second bomb attack in the city within a month. The sound of bomb explosion was audible several kilometers away from the site. The area of few hundred square meters have been covered by the debris.

The blast site is just few hundred meters away from the former office of the Prime Minister, Interior and Justice ministry of Turkey. President Tayyip Erdogan addressed the nation and said,” “These attacks, which threaten our country’s integrity and our nation’s unity and solidarity, do not weaken our resolve in fighting terrorism but bolster our determination.” The sources in the security agencies have suspected that the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) might be behind this. The group has been fighting for the Kurdish autonomy for over three decades now. It is one of the active insurgency groups in the country.

Interior Minister Efkan Ala informed that no group has claimed the responsibility but the name of group will be disclosed soon after primary investigations reach to conclusion. The security threats for the Turkey, a NATO member and prominent US ally in the region, are increasing. It is also a part of US led coalition against the Islamic State. It is also facing strong insurgency in the South East led by Kurdish militants.

The US Embassy in the region issued warning about the potential attack in the region two days ago. The United States have condemned the attack by calling it a horrific act against the Turkish people. A suicide bomb blast in Ankara has shocked the Turkey.
