The massacre Assam: Death toll rises to 81

The massacre in Assam left more than 81 people killed, most of them being women and children. The tribal settlers of the area have been subjected to numerous conflicts like this in the past.

The massacre in Assam left more than 81 people killed, most of them being women and children. The tribal settlers of the area have been subjected to numerous conflicts like this in the past. According to witnesses armed men from NDFB, the National Democratic Front of Bodoland came dressed in military outfit and opened fire in the villages of Kokrajhar and Sonitpur district.  Situation turned from bad to worse when furious villagers from the affected areas began to take matters into their own hands, which led to the killing of two Bodos and torching of houses in the Kokrajhar district. There was a report of two other men hacked to death in the Chirang district. Because of the violence, five more lives were lost when the police opened fire at the villagers. The tribal settlers known as the Adivasis claim that their identity and culture is under crisis, and the only solution is self governance. The Adivasis are a Hindu and Christian mix community. Many of them were preparing for the Christmas when the attack took place.
