The excerpted interview from the documentary film India’s Daughter with December 16 rape convicts Mukesh Singh, after creating much shock, awe and disgust seems to have landed in a controversy. Home Minister Rajnath Singh reportedly sought an explanation from Tihar Jail authorities about how Mukesh Singh was allowed to give an interview. The minister, according to sources, is upset “over a rapist being interviewed by BBC London and NDTV.
Meanwhile, the interview itself has divided people on Twitter. While some felt the interview underscores the pervasiveness of victim-blaming, others wondered what the film achieves by giving space and time to someone who obviously suffers from a sick mind set. Singh in the interview says: “She [Jyoti] should just be silent and allow the rape. Then they would have dropped her off after ‘doing her’ and only hit the boy.”

It’s to be noted here that there are certain ethics to be followed while reporting on such sensitive cases, which involves an incident which had made people go out on streets. What’s the message the channels are trying to give by broadcasting the views of a rape accused?
Every Journalist is taught laws and ethics in their Journalism schools, which they’re expected to follow when it comes to reporting. Is this interview to create a fear among women in India? Nothing can go low than this.
According to the reports, of Times Now, “NDTV’s management will soon take call on whether the interview should be broadcasted or not, after itsuproar on social media.”

Well-written article! We have inadvertently provided fodder to anti-India ‘atrocity pedallers’ abroad by allowing media into the jail. This should not have happened. Rape is a serious issue that societies across the world grapple with. This case may have occurred in India but the problem exists everywhere. But these societies need poverty porn and ‘discrimination literature’ and we have their slaves in the media to do the job for them.
I appreciate your acceptance on the writing. At the same time I would say, That allowing the media should not be an issue, but allowing the media to shoot or make a commercial documentary on such a heinous crimes is something which should not be allowed.
And Why should the media not be allowed to shoot a henious crime like this?
Because they don’t shoot a documentary, but they shoot a dramatised Bollywood touch documentary. (Commercial purpose you see)
Ummm no. I don’t think so this was anything near to a dramatized Bollywood documentary.
You’re free to think whatever you feel. Its a democratic country but the fact remains is, it was dramatised because without it you don’t feel the emotions. You should read the filmmakers critics on the documentary.

Do you even know— How much a dramatic documentary can make money? I’m not saying anything its you assuming things. The way in which media commercialization is done is something which you should read and I’ve read about it and so am I being a critic about it. You’re free to assume and think whatever you want to.

Well… You do make a point! But I personally feel it wasn’t wrong to interview a rapist… because maybe we needed that insight! I felt very sad.. almost crying like and then wanted to curse him so bad! but then I realized that… maybe I need to know that… to know how bad a person can think! Maybe knowing can help us eradicate it…. Maybe knowing can help us understand why it happens at all!
The thing I am really against in the documentary is the fact they dramatized the topic to give a commercial documentary rather than a documentary!
Dramatisation is the whole point of people being against it. We won’t have opposed it if they would have done something like a documentary in real how its supposed to be.
“Is this interview to create a fear among women in India?” – Trust me, the word Rape is enough. You don’t need an interview of a rapist to do that.
“Nothing can go low than this.” – True. Dramatization of such a thing for commercial purpose is an act which must be condemned! True! But there have been far worse dramatization of Rape and the related taboos in various media platforms…. Is it right to condemn a documentary… yes… even a commercial one..which did more good than bad? That is.. if you agree it did any good at all….
