The assault took place at Sajid Mohammad’s house who lived there with his wife and six children. Several relatives were too visiting them during the incident on Thursday. Sajid’s nephew recounts when the face-off started while they were playing cricket on a vacant plot when few bike-bound youths came and questioned them what they were doing and suggested them to “go to Pakistan and play cricket”. Few moments after this incident the men with sticks, swords and other weapons barged in Sajid’s house and started the assault.
Arrests have been made on basis of a video shot by one of the family members from higher floors of house, trying to escape the attack. Most of male family members were targeted and local mobs were involved, said initial reports.
Muslim Ekta Manch chairman, Hazi Shehzad Khan, helped family members identify the perpetrators through the video and gave names to police, whom they accused of not taking any ‘strict actions’.
Of the 12 persons sustaining injuries, three were minors and around four were women. Accused may also be charged on many other accounts besides assault such as rioting (section 146) , unlawful assembly (section 149 ) , attempt to murder (section 309) , voluntarily causing hurt (section 334) , house trespass (section 442) and criminal intimidation (section 503) .
This attacks come at a time when, ruling right-wing hindu nationalist government is facing criticism for lack of security, ignorance and motivated attacks against minorities in the Lok Sabha elections less than few weeks away.
