CAA Protests Continues, Assam Govt Lifts Curfew and Resumes broadband services

Post violent protests in Assam over the citizenship amendment act, the state authorities on Tuesday morning had lifted the curfew and even restored broadband services. Union Cheif Minister, Jitendra Singh, tweeted about the judgments in the morn via his official account.

 

According to the news agency, ANI reported, the curfew was also loosened in Dibrugarh district from 6 am to 8 pm.

Chief Minister, Sarbananda Sonowal, held a meeting on Monday where he addressed the issue and checked the proper functioning of law and order in the state. After critically reviewing the situation, he made the decision to lift the curfew from Guwahati, Assam’s most commercial city.

The meeting concluded to lift the curfew completely from Guwahati from the early morning. The meeting also enabled broadband internet services throughout the state from Tuesday morning itself, said the Cheif Minister.

Bhaskarjyoti Mahanta, Director-General of Police, Assam, said the situation is under control and better now. As of now, a total of four people were killed in violence during the protests conducted against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA).

“Four people have been killed in police action, unfortunately. The situation had become such that the police had to fire in order to save more people and property,” Mahanta added. He also said that presently things are better. They even arrested 190 persons and even a special investigation team was formed which will investigate the causes of violence.

There were numerous cases of violence and riots between the protestors and security forces. People even protested after four people were shot by the police forces amidst curfew.

According to Himanta Biswa Sarma, Senior state minister, said there are a total of 136 cases in association with last week’s clash. These incidents of violence are being taken seriously especially the cases registered during Dec 10 and 11. Sarma also added that there is a pattern in which these violent acts unfold where the involvement of 24 people in the violence at Kalakshetra.

Zubair Anam was leading the mob, according to the police, added Sarma.
