Ramadan Special : Health Benefits of Fasting

Ramadan is the ninth month in the Islamic calendar and the Muslims all over the world, fast in this month. Fasting is compulsory for all elders excepts for those who are suffering from an illness, travelling, pregnant, breastfeeding, diabetic, chronically ill or menstruating. The intention of fasting during Ramadan is to learn self-control, self-discipline, to purify the body as well as soul and to commiserate with the hungry and poor. Along with some spiritual reasons, the Ramadan fasting has some health benefits too and we are listing them down.

Ramadan fasting boosts your brain up

In the USA, scientists carried out a study and found out that the mental focus attained in Ramadan and an increase in the level of the brain-derived neurotrophic factor is observed. It helps the body to yield more brain cells which improve the brain function.

Metabolism Improves

Fasting offers a chance for people to reset their metabolism. Fasting forces the body to work more and harder without food and drink. This will use up the fats stored in the body. Breaking the fast with healthy food will be another positive factor which can help a person to reset the metabolism. Increase in metabolism leads to improve the energy level of a person.

Weight loss

The process of fasting reduces inflammation, improves blood lipids and helps in weight loss. Everyone feels that it is pretty obvious that the people who are fasting will lose weight. For weight loss, only reducing the number of calories is not important, the time at which you consume them is important too. And that’s what happens in Ramadan.

Detoxification

In the month of Ramadan, amazing detoxification occurs in the body. In Ramadan fasting, people do not eat or drink the whole day and that’s how your digestive system gets a chance to detoxify.  Also, harmful toxins burn along with the fats.

Reduce Appetite

The food consumption decreases in the month of Ramadan and because of that, even after the Ramadan finishes, you need to eat very less to satisfy your stomach. Isn’t that great? Also, a lot of healthy eating occur in this month and hence your chance to get most out of it.

No matter what religious factors lie behind every festival, each tradition provides some benefits to the human race. Sometimes it feels like our ancestors knew about this information age, which is pretty hectic. And that’s why they started new festivals to keep us entertained and healthy with the help of various traditions.

Happy Ramadan, everyone!
