The International Men’s Day is celebrated every year on November 19 to honor and celebrate men who play all kinds of roles, ranging from a father, a husband, a son, a best friend and much more. The day is observed to celebrate men’s health, promote gender equality, highlight role models, etc. Basically, it is to celebrate the presence and relevance of men in an individual’s life.
International Men’s Day is observed by over 80 countries and is supported by UNESCO. Issues faced by men on a global scale such as discrimination, exploitation, oppression, violence and inequality etc. are also taken note of so as to discussion of remedial measures for the same and to give them their rights.
This is year’s theme is – ‘Making a Difference for Men and Boys’ as mentioned on the official website of IMD (International Men’s Day). It focuses on giving importance to men and boys. The theme also focuses on helping those who make practical improvements in the health and well-being of men and boys globally.
International Men’s Day is an annual international celebration. It was started on 7 February 1992 by Thomas Oaster. The International Men’s Day project was conceived a year ago on 8 February 1991. Subsequently, in 1999, it was resumed by Dr. Jerome Teelucksingh.
In 2007, India celebrated International Men’s Day for the first time. Since then, International Men’s Day is celebrated every year on 19 November. The day is dedicated to men all around the world. Several programmes are organized for men to give them special treatment. It is not that much popular in India but gradually the emphasis of celebrating this day has started catching up.
Needless to say, the day expects you to ensure that the men in your lives know how much you respect and love their presence.
The gesture could be a quote, a message, a gif, a song dedication, a gift or simply by cooking them their favorite meal.
