Ed Woodward resigns from his post as Manchester United executive vice-chairman

Ed Woodward had been one of the key players to play a part in the European Super League project. He announced his notice to resign from his role as the Executive Vice-Chairman of Manchester United at the end of this year. United had been one of the primary clubs to be involved in the breakaway project. Ed Woodward was singled out in a long list of club executives for criticism by UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin.

Woodward joined United in 2005 and took over in his current role, replacing David Gill as the executive vice-chairman in 2013. Throughout his career with the Reds, he has overseen 37 major signings across 15 transfer windows. Including Marouane Fellaini, Ander Herrera, Juan Mata, Luke Shaw, Radamel Falcao, Bastian Schweinsteiger, Anthony Martial, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Romelu Lukaku, Alexis Sanchez, Nemanja Matic, Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Harry Maguire, Bruno Fernandes, Edinson Cavani, the list goes on.

“I am extremely proud to have served United and it has been an honour to work for the world’s greatest football club for the past 16 years.”
“The club is well positioned for the future and it will be difficult to walk away at the end of the year.

“The last 16 months have brought so many unique challenges… The financial impact on football clubs has been severe, but United have been one of the most robust and resilient in the face of extraordinary financial pressures.”

According to Mirror, It is understood Woodward was due to step down at the end of the year. Still, the announcement of his departure was brought forward because of potential leaks. However, the timing of the decision to make public his exit suggests it was heavily linked to the disastrous ESL venture.

Woodward had been heavily criticized for the club’s failure to procure a Premier League title despite spending a ton of money on big-name signings. Woodward decided to sack David Moyes, ending his six-year contract early than expected. Louis van Gaal and Jose Mourinho were also dismissed for failing to match the team’s expectations. Woodward has nothing but good to say about Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, the current United manager, as he has been able to maintain the team in great form with the same squad.

It had now been announced by all the executives of the six Premier League founder clubs involved in the formation of the European Super League that all of them would be pulling out of the campaign as it is not ethical and the fans were disgusted by the sole idea of it.
