Sony’s Playstation 5 reveal event in July gave fans a look at many upcoming exciting video games. However, none of them is as shrouded in mystery as Square Enix’s next IP, tentatively known as Project Athia.
The game is being made by Luminous Productions, a subsidiary of Square Enix. Luminous Productions previously worked on Final Fantasy XV. The studio is very much familiar with the type of games Square Enix makes. According to the developers, Project Athia will blend fantasy elements with art and Playstation 5’s technological prowess.
Project Athia: Release date & availability
Unfortunately, we don’t know when Project Athia will be available for release. Reports suggest that work on it began in late 2019. So we don’t think that a game of such size will be out in a while. However, if we were to guess, our bet would be on a late 2021 or early 2022 release date.
According to the reveal video, Project Athia will only be available on the PS5 and PC. But, Takeshi Aramaki, the head of Luminous Productions, later suggested that the video game will be optimised for the Playstation 5. Thus, we think there will be differences between the PC and PS5 versions of Project Athia.
Project Athia: Gameplay
Thus far, Square Enix has kept much of the game under tight wraps. So we don’t know much about the kind of game Project Athia will be. Still, the announcement trailer suggested that the video game will have an open-world environment. Later, Yosuka Matsuda, the Square Enix president, confirmed the same.
Project Athia: Setting
From what we have seen in game’s footage, it is safe to assume that Project Athia is a fantasy video game. Plus, the footage suggests that it would revolve around a mysterious woman who stumbled upon a world that is unknown to her. However, she gains immense magical powers in this world and uses her powers to reach her homeworld.
On a similar note, we can also confirm that unlike previous rumours, Project Athia is not a Final Fantasy sequel but a completely new IP.
