Starfield: Everything we know so far about the space RPG

Bethesda’s first brand new IP in a long time

Back in 2013, Bethesda Softworks registered a trademark on the name ‘Starfield’. As expected, it kicked off a bunch of rumours about the studio’s upcoming project. However, the IP wouldn’t be confirmed by Bethesda until the 2018 E3 event. There, the company officially announced the title and hinted that Starfield is going to be an AAA sci-fi RPG. Since then, we have not received much new information about the upcoming game. Still, we have pieced together every bit of information available now.

Starfield: Release date & availability

Bethesda is yet to announce Starfield’s release date. As we know, Bethesda is a vast studio which is currently working on multiple titles. Therefore, we don’t expect it to release anytime soon. However, since Bethesda has confirmed it to be a next-gen title, we assume it will release in 2021, at the earliest.

The game was initially scheduled to release on PS5, Xbox Series X/S and PC. Yet, recent rumours suggest that Sony was in talks with Bethesda to make Starfield a Playstation exclusive game. However, now that Microsoft has acquired Bethesda, that may all change. Reportedly, Microsoft is looking to keep Starfield as an Xbox and PC exclusive. If the tech giants go through with the decision, the game won’t be coming towards PS5.

Starfield: Setting and gameplay

Currently, information on the game’s story is scarce. What we do know is, the game takes place in space. According to Todd Howard, the director of Bethesda Softworks, a large portion of Starfield focuses on spacecraft and space travel. Furthermore, Howard travelled to SpaceX to research space traversal and bring authenticity to the game.

As for the gameplay, we can confirm that Starfield is a sci-fi space RPG. However, Bethesda has hinted that the upcoming game brings a change to the genre. Reportedly, the game will have different mechanics compared to previous Bethesda RPGs. Yet, Howard indicated that the game will still have the Bethesda DNA in some form or the other.

Starfield: Trailer

Although the game is still a long while away, Howard has asked gamers to be patient about it. In the meantime, check out the game’s reveal teaser here.
