Everything we know about Oddworld: Soulstorm

Set to release in 2020

The Oddworld franchise has been in the gaming community for a long time. First beginning with Oddworld: Abe’s Oddysee in 1997, the developers have brought it back to life with the 2014 remake, Oddworld: New ‘n’ Tasty! Later, in 2016, Oddworld Inhabitants announced a new entry to the series. The latest game, titled Oddworld: Soulstorm is a re-imagination of the 1996 game Oddworld: Abe’s Exoddus.

Oddworld: Soulstorm – Release date & availability

The studio initially intended to launch the game in 2017. However, due to production issues, the developer delayed it to 2019. After yet another delay, it was showcased at the PS5 event in June. Although the developer still has not provided an exact date, they confirmed that it would be out in 2020. Thus far, the game is set to come out on PC, PS4 and PS5. An Xbox or other console version is yet to be confirmed.

Oddworld: Soulstorm – Gameplay

Like the previous titles, Oddworld: Soulstorm is also a 2.5D side-scrolling platformer. In it, players control Abe, a former slave who has to save his compatriots from slave labour. The video game puts a heavy emphasis on stealth and puzzles. Therefore, these two are the core elements of Oddworld: Soulstorm. The developer has added in a new crafting system to the game which can be used to make weapons and other equipment. The game also features a karma system that affects its story. Furthermore, there are two types of in-game currency in Oddworld: Soulstorm; physical currency and spiritual currency. Both of them can be used to get items or consumed for abilities.

Oddworld: Soulstorm – Setting

The upcoming game is in no way a complete remake of Oddworld: Abe’s Exoddus. Instead, it is a modern re-imagination of the game. Thus, the story elements will not be identical. Due to some issues, the studio had to take shortcuts with the original game’s story. Hence, the 1998 video game wasn’t as well-received as its predecessor. However, with the new rendition, the developer intends to add a unique aspect to the story. Therefore, the new game will be more dark and grim. Moreover, as it is a direct continuation of Oddworld: Sweet ‘n’ Tasty, the story takes place immediately after its precursor.
