On Friday, November 13, 2020, the Head of the World Health Organization announced that WHO will set up a Global Center for Traditional Medicine in India. He was impressed by Narendra Modi expressing confidence as India is emerging as the ‘Pharmacy of the World’, the WHO institutional will become the center for global wellness.
WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus was present via video message at the event in which PM Modi inaugurated two future-ready Ayurveda Institutions in Jaipur and Jamnagar through video conferencing on the occasion of the 5th Ayurveda Day.
The Ministry of AYUSH was established in the year 2016. Since 2016, the AYUSH ministry has been observing ‘’Ayurveda Day” every year on the auspicious occasion of Dhanwantri Jayanti which is also known as Dhanteras.
As we all know ‘health is wealth’ so that this occasion is a perfect day to observe and celebrate it as ‘Ayurveda Day’.
The Institute of Teaching and Research in Ayurveda (ITRA), Jamnagar, Gujarat and the National Institute of Ayurveda (NIA) Jaipur, Rajasthan are both premier Institutions of Ayurveda in the country.
WHO director said, “This new center will help WHO to implement its traditional medicine strategy 2014-2023 which aims to support countries to become major center in terms of providing better health facilities to the people. It aims to support countries in developing policies and action plans to strengthen the role of traditional medicine as part of their journey to universal health coverage and healthier, fairer, and safer world”.
“I am glad to announce that we have agreed on setting up a WHO Global Center for Traditional Medicine in India to boost the research training and awareness of traditional, complementary medicine and evidence”, he further added in a video message.
PM Modi in his thanking speech said, “I would like to thank the WHO and especially to the Director-General Tedros for giving us this opportunity and showing trust to India. I am glad and confident that just like India has emerged as the ‘Pharmacy of the World’ exactly in the same way this center for traditional medicine will become the center for global wellness”.
“It is a great pleasure for Indian that the WHO has chosen India for its Global Center. Now it is our responsibility that work will be done in this direction from India and I ensure expectation will be served to the people and make our research center more powerful in the term of serving health”, Modi said.
“As world know India has been holding Ayurveda from its ancestors and it is its heritage. Its expansion entails the welfare of mankind and all Indians will be happy to see that the country’s traditional knowledge is making other countries prosperous”, he added.
Due to COVID-19 impact this year 2020, the 5th Ayurveda Day is being observed virtually at national and international platforms.
