Vehicle sales increased, demand for electric two-wheelers boost

Amidst the second wave of Corona, 2,31,633 passenger vehicles were sold in the country in June this year, which is more than 10 percent from 2,09,522 vehicles sold in June 2019. In June last year, there was a tremendous drop in vehicle sales due to the Covid imposed lockdown and 1,05,617 vehicles were sold in that month.

According to the data released by the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM), the apex body of automobile companies, in the month of June, the total sales of 12,96,807 vehicles were sold in the passenger vehicles, three wheelers, two wheelers and quadricycle category in the country. While in June last year, this figure was 11,30,744. However, in June 2019, a total of 19,10,969 vehicles were sold in these categories. However, the total sales of three wheelers last month declined to 9,397 units from 10,300 units in the same period last year.

Some improvement in sales

Releasing the sales figures for the first quarter ended June, SIAM Director General Rajesh Menon told reporters here that the nationwide lockdown imposed in the first quarter due to the pandemic has led to a sharp decline in vehicle sales, although there is some improvement in sales in the month of June. At the same time, SIAM President Kenichi Ayukawa said regarding the sales figures that many original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) had to close their manufacturing plants in this period (April-June 2021) to provide oxygen for medical purposes. He said automakers also contributed to increasing the supply of oxygen to hospitals, supporting health facilities and helping local communities.

Demand for electric two wheelers increased

According to SIAM, 10,55,777 two-wheelers have been sold in the month of June, of which 1,091 are electric two-wheelers. In this month, 7,77,100 motorcycles and 2,41,689 scooters have been sold in the country as against 10,14,827 two wheelers in June 2020.

Sales of all vehicles increased in the first quarter

Sales across categories increased to 31,80,039 units in the first quarter of the current fiscal from 14,92,612 units in the April-June quarter of the previous fiscal. The total commercial vehicle sales during April-June in the current financial year stood at 1,05,800 units as against 31,636 units in the corresponding period of 2020-21. Similarly, sales of three-wheelers increased to 24,376 units in this fiscal as compared to 12,760 units in the first quarter of 2020-21.
