PAN-Aadhaar Link: Deadline extended to December 31 by CBDT

According to a notification dated September 28, 2019, The Ministry of Finance, announced that the PAN with Aadhaar link deadline has been extended to December 31, 2019, granted another 3 months extension. The deadline was earlier on September 30, 2019. This marks the seventh time the government has extended the deadline for the 10-digit PAN card to link with 12-digit Aadhaar which serves as a Unique Identity Number. The last extension was in March this year.

As per the recent amendment by the Finance (No. 2) Act, 2019, if a taxpayer fails to link his PAN with Aadhaar number by the due date then, the PAN shall be deemed to be inoperative because of which the taxpayer will be unable to quote his PAN. The taxpayer would be unable to conduct financial or business transactions where quoting of PAN is mandatory.

However, CBDT (The Central Board of Direct Taxes) has not yet notified the manner in which PAN will become inoperative if not linked with Aadhaar by the deadline.

PAN is allotted by the IT Department to a person, firm or entity where Aadhaar is issued by Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI).

Here are the steps as to how the PAN and Aadhaar can be linked:
