While celebrating New Year’s Eve mostly in their own house, people across the world decided to leverage technology and connect with their near and dear ones.
As partying in group’s outdoors remained a cause of concern on the back of the coronavirus pandemic, to stay in touch with dear ones, people wished their relatives and friend via WhatsApp voice and video calling feature. Other than WhatsApp, many people wished through other online mediums like Instagram and Facebook.
As a result, a number of calling through WhatsApp is recorded the highest and turned out to be one of the most used among Facebook applications as many as 1.4 billion voice and video calls were made on WhastApp across countries in one day, that is new year’s eve.
In 2020, technology has become the only medium to connect with people. Because of the global pandemic, social distancing and lockdown could impact the relationship but thanks to technologies that help people to stay connected and survive in the period of isolation and separations.
Apart from WhatsApp, other Facebook-owned apps like Instagram and messenger also saw an increase in engagement. According to the company, New Year’s Eve 2020 is also recorded as the biggest day for messenger group video calls where calls can be made with more than 2 people in a group in the US.

On the other popular social media platform – Instagram made more than 55 millions live broadcasts on the last day of 2020 to wish people.
The New Year 2021 has brought a lot of hopes and resolution for people, whatever people survived or suffered in 2020 would be lesson. An unexpected year with the most up and down and taught a new way of living.
