About 300 people lost their lives when the inflatable raft they were travelling in overturned when huge waves crashed onto it.

Italian coastguards jumped into action and were able to rescue only a hand full of people after nine of them were brought dead on the Island of Lampedusa by an Italian tugboat.

There were more casualties as about 30 of them died from hypothermia during the 18 hour journey to Italy.

It was on Sunday when three rafts from the coast of Libya had set course for Italy but the violent weather and the freezing temperature resulted into a catastrophe for the travelling migrants.

Many believe that had Italy never ended their rescue mission program known as the Mare Nostrum last year, this disaster could have had a different outcome.

Italy had launched the Mare Nostrum mainly for this cause alone but didn’t last long due to concerns over cost.
